Dancing The Animal

“What have you been up to?”. Lately I have been asked this question a lot, along with people saying that they have been missing my social media presence and my photos. So, I thought I’d let you know… It is pretty simple, actually. I have just been listening to my soul and doing whatever brings me joy. My life has been turning more and more cat-like, and I spent a lot of time simply being/allowing things to get done on their own.
How do I do that? Take this blog post for example. It all started with listening to “Dancing The Animal” song by Esperanza Spalding, while I was editing photos from my shoot this afternoon. It sparkled the idea for my previous post, but then the song continued to echo in my head desiring further expression. So, I went through my files and curated a few dance-themed self portraits, that I am going to combine with some quotes and more song lyrics to illustrate a common theme. Since art can be interpreted in so many ways I will allow you to have your own experience 🙂

I’m out, the house of worship
Rife with pride, rife with doctrine
Rife with sin, now my laptop or device
Is where I shop for wisdom
At my very fingertips so much more than some holy man
Could ever hope to comprehend
So maybe now the holy spirit is
Simply a mighty network
Anchored in accumulated knowledge
Now encompassing the globe
Zeros and ones no-one can touch
You must behold
So have you prayed to your phone today?
Atoning for all ignorance we bow our busy heads to
Seek immortal wisdom from the clouds
Rollin’ down the social mountain to the tablet in each hand
8 billion new commandments
At my command and some I post too
Google humanity but while you do
Guard the animal in you
God’s the animal in you (in you)
No pride no greed no sin (in you)
Guard the animal in you (in you x2)
Guard the animal, God’s the animal in you
But when you ask the web anything
It’s always there for you
Though the answers may not be true
Searching an engine for the ghost of truth
While the animal in you
Guards the tangible in you (in you)
Your heart, your guts, your skin (in you)
Guard the tangible in you (in you)
Guard the animal
Guard the tangible
Amazing grace I miss you badly
I had the search the meaning (of the word)
So little of it sadly
With all this forward leaning (grace)
If it’s in me
What good is all this reading (of the word)
Open attachments eating
Into my time for living (grace)
If there is a god out there (of the word)
Once you’ve ended famine and warfare (grace)
If you would just make these endless
Emails disappear (of the word)
Oh, and show us how to fix the climate while you’re here
Your search for help did not match any documents
Suggestions make sure all words are spelled correctly
Try different keywords, try more general keywords
Try fewer keywords, maybe try using real words
Try using your words, ask another humanoid
Try asking the one you are trying to avoid
Yourself
Accumulated knowledge now encompassing the globe
Zeroes and ones no-one can touch
You must behold
To understand
The burden of evolving man
But, may you not become a stranger to
God the animal in you
God the tangible in you (in you)
No service, page, or pin (in you)
The program you came in with (in you)
Guard the animal
Guard the tangible
God’s the animal
God’s the tangible
In you
In you
In you

“There is a vitality, a life force, an energy, a quickening that is translated through you into action, and because there is only one of you in all time, this expression is unique. And if you block it, it will never exist through any other medium and will be lost.”
Martha Graham

“Faeries, come take me out of this dull world,
For I would ride with you upon the wind,
Run on the top of the dishevelled tide,
And dance upon the mountains like a flame.”

When all the worst we fear let’s fall its weight
When the gyre widens on a window, wave breaks
When St. Peter loses cool and bars the gates
When Atlas acts a man and makes his arms shake
When the birds are heard again and their singing
And once atrocity is hoarse from voice and shame
And when the earth is trembling on some new beginnin’
With the same sweet shock of when Adam first came
Be, be, be, be, be
Be as you’ve always been
Be, be, be, be, be
Be as you’ve always been
(Lover be good to me)
Be as you’ve always been
Be like a love that discovered the sin
That freed the first man, would do so again
And lover be good to me (Lover be good to me)
Be that hopeful feeling when Eden was lost
That’s been next to our after since the master was crossed
Which side of the wall really suffers that cost
Oh, lover be good to me
When the man who gives the order is born next time ’round on the boats and back
When the body is starving at the border
Or on TV given people the sack
Love, when the sea rises to meet us
Oh, when there’s nothing left for you and I to do
Oh, when there is nobody upstairs to receive us
When I have no kind words left, love, for you
Be, be, be, be, be
Be as you’ve always been
Be, be, be, be, be
Be as you’ve always been
(Lover be good to me)
Be love in its disrepute
Scorches a hillside and salts every root
And watches the slowing and starving of troops
And lover be good to me (Lover be good to me)
Be there and your stairs you stack
Or be like the rose you hold in your hand
I will grow bold in a barren and desolate land
And lover be good to me
Love, won’t you be?
Love, won’t you be?
Be as you always been?
Love, won’t you be?
Love, won’t you be?
Be as you always been?
Love, won’t you be?
Love, won’t you be?
Be as you always been?
Love, won’t you be?
Love, won’t you be?
Be as you always been?

{If a woman is too wild or expressive
She is labeled chaotic
over emotional
I don’t want to be apologetic
for wanting to express
myself.}
Am I out of my mind for feeling some kind of bliss to kiss of the highway?
Sure, it’s no Milky Way and I’m a little lost in LA
But I’ll just listen to the cars that are going real fast
I don’t have it all figured out baby, but don’t you try to stop me
I don’t mind pissing in the wind—oh, be my only friend
I think I feel another moon rising, whatever the fuck that means
Don’t think I quite believe in anything, what does that make me?
In the last of our broken breaking, trying, living, learning, winning
You won’t make it, my son, if you don’t learn to run on tightropes, laugh at bad jokes
You gotta be something, you gotta be someone
You gotta be something, you gotta be someone
What does that mean and could I rather be nobody?
What does that mean and could I rather be nobody?

“Now I am going to reveal to you something which is very pure, a totally white thought. It is always in my heart; it blooms at each of my steps… The Dance is love, it is only love, it alone, and that is enough… I, then, it is amorously that I dance: to poems, to music but now I would like to no longer dance to anything but the rhythm of my soul.”
